The detailed analyses of raw CLs and their hydrotreated oil were carried out and the following results wereobtained. 1. The composition on the same carbon number was similar each other for the upgrading CLs, and the product property as a motor fuel was dependent on the boiling range and the aromatic content controlled by the severity of the hydrotreatment. 2. PO and PA were easily converted to monoaromatic and saturated compounds, and MA was further hydrogenated at a secondary upgrading. 3. The aromatic saturation proceeded from polyaromatics to partially hydroaromatics and finally to polycyclic naphthenes without any ring-opening reactions. 4. The coal-derived diesel fuel contained a large amount of dicyclic and tricyclic naphthenes (about 70%) and the amount of compounds with long n-alkyl chain was small.
