Supercritical water gasification is expected to be an effective thermochemical energy conversion process for wet biomass, and many researchers are working on this technology. Early researchers includes Antal from Univ. of Hawaii (Xu et al., 1996; Antal et al., 2002) and Elliott from Pacific Northwest Lab. (Elliott et al., 1997). In Japan, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organizatiou (NEDO) supported a project where hydrothermal pulping and partial oxidation is applied to conventioual supercritical water gasification. NEDO is also supporting investigation of Supercritical (Water) Methane Productiou Technology, where they are investigating the feasibility of a process where biomass is first solubilized and then gasified for synthesis of methane.
