Phosphorus removal from wastewater in upgraded activated sludge system with natural zeolite addition

order to investigate possibilities of phosphorus removal from wastewater two experimentalstudies were run; the first one was an upgraded activated sludge system with NZ addition andthe other one was a conventional activated sludge system, run as a control unit. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the enhanced performances of upgraded activated sludge systemwith NZ; particularly as far as phosphorus removal, chemical oxygen demand (COD) andsludge characteristics. The results point to the possibility of successful phosphorus and CODremoval from wastewater by activated sludge bioaugmented with phosphorus accumulatingbacteria using NZ as a support material.
