摘要

A hydroplane detection/alert system was successfully deployed in Charlotte, North Carolinarn(USA) which improved motorists' safety. The system was deployed to address a hydroplanernsituation in a section of temporary roadway through a work zone. A comparison of the datarnbefore deployment to that after deployment showed: (1) a 21% reduction in the number ofrnincidents, (2) a 35% reduction in the resulting damages, and (3) a 7% reduction in the number ofrninjuries. The system leveraged the latest technology in pavement sensors, portable changeablernmessage signs, roadside controllers, and wireless communications to inform motorists ofrnhazardous conditions ahead. The system was fully compliant with the NTCIP standardrn(National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation Systems Protocol)rnwhich enables a straightforward integration of a variety of sensor types and output devices tornaddress a variety of applications in the transportation industry.
