摘要

This paper elaborates strengths, prerequisites, conditions and limitations of the application of artificial neural networks (in the following referred to as 'neural networks') in reliability prediction. Applications that are particularly suitable for reliability prediction are examined with a focus on the design phase. Application areas and reliability problems in which neural networks are already implemented are reviewed. Design phase and railway rolling stock applications are in special focus of this article.
