ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR HEATING AND COOLING OF RESIDENTI AL BUILDINGS IN IRAN

Heating and cooling energy requirements of a four-storey residential building, with four apartments and a total area of 800m2on each floor, were determined, using the climatological data of Tehran, Mashad, Isfahan, Tabriz and Shiraz. The same energy needs were determined for a single-storey residential building with 200m2 floor area for the cities of Ahwaz, Rasht, Hamedan, Kerman and Bandar- Abbas. These estimates included the peak heating and cooling needs (in kW), as well as the energy needs for each day and month of the year (in MJ). Measures to reduce the needed energy included the reduction of infiltration of the outside air, employment of a curtain to cover the entire windows and exposed walls (from ceiling to floor) during winter nights and summer days, insulating the ceiling and the exposed walls on the outside, using double-glazed windows, and finally, employing externally-mounted blinds (called Persian Blinds). It was found that employing special sealing tapes to reduce infiltration was the most effective measure for heating and cooling energy conservation. It also had the shortest pay-back period (about one heating season.) Other measures, in the order of their pay-back periods, were: the employment of wall curtains to cover the entire exposed walls and windows, combination of the sealing tapes and curtains, externally-mounted Persian Blinds, insulation of external surfaces, double-glazed windows, and finally, the combination of wall curtains, wall and roof insulation, and double-glazed windows.
