The successes and new visibility of solar electricity ― photovoltaics ― as a growing energy source and real business worldwide have heightened criticisms, even attacks, and instilled some exaggerated euphoria ― some warranted, some based on partial truths, and many perpetuated from urban myths and legends about the technology. Common among these are the "7 myths surrounding photovoltaics" ― or better, the "7 deadly sins" since they unfairly detract from the true value and potential of this energy supply. This paper addresses a selection of come common misperceptions or misrepresentations that have been expressed prominently in various publications, testimonies, and interviews in the recent months. These myths range from the contention that photovoltaics can never do anything ― to the implied virtue that the technology can do everything right now.
