PRINCE2~(TM) is a project management methodology developed by the UK government and widely used by public and private organisations around the world. The wide scale acceptance of PRINCE2 is supported by an internationally recognised accreditation and qualifications scheme that is run in accordance with ISO standards with all parts of the process being independently verified. THIS PAPER WILL LOOK AT: 1. The historical background and rationale for developing PRINCE2. 2. Overview of the content of the method with a particular focus on the governance structure and product based approach. 3. Based on experience to date, a summary of the main benefits and some of the drawbacks organisations have encountered in their implementation of PRINCE2. 4. Planned development of PRINCE2, and in particular the way it is nested within established best practice programme methodologies and emerging portfolio methodologies. 5. An introduction to maturity models that support PRINCE2 and are being used by organisations to assess the effectiveness of the methodology and to identify areas of improvement to gain even greater benefit. 6. Relationship between the PRINCE2 qualifications and internationally recognised generic project and programme qualifications. PRINCE2 does not stand alone or in isolation but should be used alongside corporate and governance structures, well trained project managers and project teams and used in conjunction with a wider set of project management development programmes and supporting tools.
