What is a good ceramic core?

Ceramic cores are today extensively used to make hollow shape castings. The right match between the ceramic core and its use is essential for the performance of the casting process, which can have a very significant economic impact.This paper aims at compiling the relations between the characteristics of the ceramic core and its use at the different steps of the investment casting process. It covers the main characteristics, from the chemical nature of the core components, including the strengthening materials, to the physical and thermo-mechanical properties of the fired ceramic core. Some examples based on both laboratory scale and industrial results are given to illustrate this review.
