A two dimensional model of a casting mold was created to investigate the filling sequence using the Volume of Fluids method. The simulation created an animated sequence which was analyzed showing how the metal flowed in the mold and how the air escaped. The parameters were adjusted to match the output to the time of fill and the amount of splashing. Once a baseline was created the geometry of the mold was adjusted to see how the filling would be affected. The modeling showed that the size of the lower runners could limit the air entrapped in the metal and provided evidence of the location on the mold that is the last to fill and more likely to have partially filled parts.
