New Mobile Healthcare Applications - An Assessment of Approaches to Mobile Remote Patient Monitoring

This paper offers an assessment of the emerging market for the mobile remote physiological monitoring of patients through wireless wearable sensors and actuators. With on-going technical improvements in miniaturisation, bio-medical sensor development, radio network technologies and communications standards, highly mobile wearable and personal monitoring units are being developed and tested in various forms. An initial analysis of economic and market issues in the development and deployment of such systems is offered. The two-fold focus is a) firstly on defining the structure and characteristics of the evolving market for these services and supply of devices and b) secondly, on the role of infrastructure, component and data format standardisation in this emerging market.
