This paper deals with the uncoded BER performance of a single-carrier QAM receiver for digital HDTV signals transmitted over the CATV distribution network. As the use of decision feedback equalization proves to be necessary in order to combat intersymbol interference (ISI), we will investigate the BER performance in terms of equalizer complexity. Two receiver configurations will be proposed. In the first one adaptive matched filtering is used, while in the second fixed matched filtering is applied. We show that if a synchronizer is used that carefully controls the sampling clock phase, the second configuration performs only slightly worse than the first one. We also show that a relatively small number of equalizer taps is sufficient to remove most of the ISI.
