This paper discusses the implementation design of fiber-optic digital transport/delivery cable networks for multichannel MPEG-based compressed video distribution services which are expected to open a new digital video era, taking into account the technical trend of lightwave transport and the current situation of standardization programs such as the MPEG and the B-ISDN. Three types of candidates (i.e., Subcarrier multiplexing (SCM), Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)) are briefly compared from the view point of the implementation technology and economics.
