Many studies indicate that long term exposure to particulate matter, especially fine dimensions, implies serious health effects. In this study, the pollution trend of PM2.5 particulate matter in the ambient air of Nanjing is investigated. The data reported here constitute the results of the first long-term monitoring campaign of PM2.5 concentration levels in Nanjing city. Nine hours in day time and thirteen hours in night time averages atmospheric concentrations of PM2.5 were measured at a site near downtown Nanjing, in July 2004-March 2005. The values of PM2.5 concentrations ranged between 42.79 and 310.78 μg/m3, and the mean is 137.73 μg/m3, The PM2.5 concentrations of 86 samples exceeded the US EPA standard (daily average value 65 μg/m3 and yearly mean 15 μg/m3 ), It counted for 95.56% of the total samples. The results indicate that the pollution of PM2.5 in the ambient air of Nanjing (China) is sevious, More attention need to be payed on the issue.
