Optical fibers, cables, and sensors are often intended for use in applications where the coatings, inks, matrix, and/or buffer resins are subjected to high temperatures and other harsh environments. It is important to have good estimates of thermooxidative and physicochemical durability of such UV cure compositions. It is difficult to mimic these conditions and determine the functional long-term behavior of fiber appliances in the coatings development lab. However, there are a number of methods available to estimate the thermal and durability characteristics of coatings intended for high temperature use. This paper will illustrate the use of Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) as one such method.
