Drop Cable Challenges in FTTx

New drop cable designs are being developed to address the specific needs of large-scale deployment of fiber to the x (FTTx). Drop cables may be installed aerially, direct buried, or placed within underground duct space. For each of these installation methods, there are various industry standard tests that examine one or more of the mechanical or environmental forces involved. However, in many cases there are gaps between these test methods and the true requirements when compared to real-world installations. Over the past few years, Corning has sought to develop a suite of additional tests that simulate true installation conditions more closely in order to go "the extra mile."
