Rock bolting and rock support and their combination in hard coal mining - a comparative study made with UDEC

The distinct element code, UDEC (Itasca 1993), is a very popular working tool to model jointed and faulted rock - similar to rock in hard coal mines. In a comparative study the differences of stress and displacements will be shown to be dependent on the type of support or reinforcement. In a hard coal mine in the DSK Deutsche Steinkohle AG, roadway tunnels were driven and reinforced with rock bolts. In this mine there was the possibility to validate the calculation with in-situ measurements. In some cases steel arches were used in addition to the rock bolts. The steel arch construction is much more expensive than rock bolting. In this case it was possible to calculate the effect of adding the steel arch supports. The results of the calculations clearly show that the addition of steel arches did not result in a higher level of safety.
