ASTM D 7392-07 Standard Practice for Certification of PM Detectors and Bag Leak Detectors and Its Challenges

A new ASTM D 7392-07 "Standard Practice for PM Detector and Bag Leak Detector Manufacturers to Certify Conformance with Design and Performance Specifications for Cement Plants" was published in October 2007. The comprehensive series of design and performance specifications and the test procedures contained in this practice will help to ensure that measurement systems are capable of providing reliable monitoring data and will assist equipment suppliers and users in the evaluation and selection of appropriate monitoring equipment. This practice specifically applies to the manufacturers of particulate matter detectors (PMDs) and bag leak detectors (BLDs) that are used to monitor particulate matter emissions from kiln systems at Portland cement plants that burn hazardous waste. The manufacturer's certification requires disclosure of certain information to the end user and a one-time field demonstration for each model. The certification also requires annual tests of representative instruments to demonstrate conformance with design requirements and tests of each instrument prior to shipment to demonstrate conformance with performance specifications.rnA contemporary transmissometer (LightHawk Model 560) was installed at a preheater/precalciner cement plant with fabric filters. The monitor was evaluated as a PMD relative to the ASTM D 7392-07 standard during an extended field demonstration. The results of the field test are summarized and presented in this paper and demonstrate the Model 560 meets all of the 7392-07 specifications. Some suggestions for others attempting demonstrations of conformance with D 7392 and some observations about the standard are provided.
