The high-temperature, high-pressure water-gas shift reaction was conducted in a prototype palladium-based membrane reactor. The effect of the membrane material on the reaction kinetics and the possible poisoning of the membrane by CO and H_2O were studied. Palladium was found to exert a significant catalytic effect when cycling reducing/oxidizing conditions were imposed. The presence of CO and H_2O did not affect the permeance of hydrogen through palladium membranes at high temperature (900℃). Preliminary testing with a 1-mm thick Pd-disk membrane reactor suggests that the production of hydrogen can be accomplished by the water-gas shift reaction carried out at the conditions present at the outlet of a gasifier.
