One of the main objectives of DOE's FutureGen project, the reduction or elimination of greenhouse gas emissions during coal-fired electricity generation, will be realized through geologic storage of carbon dioxide (CO_2). For a preliminary screening of the potential for geologic CO_2 sequestration in Illinois, three subsurface reservoirs were analyzed: coal beds, mature oil fields, and a deep saline reservoir. A series of maps were created using a GIS to develop an initial depiction of areas where conditions in one or more of these reservoirs are especially favorable for securely storing large volumes of CO_2.
