Introduction Gasification is one of the most promising processes among biomass-to-energy processes. As part of the Biomass Project sponsored by NEDO, we are studying the gasification of biomass using a laboratory-developed entrained gasifier and clarifying the most suitable conditions for synthesizing liquid fuels. In previous studies, we reported gasification of various kinds of biomass using this gasifier and found that Japanese (J.) cedar (Cryptomeriajaponica) wood was gasified well using steam alone as a gasification agent, whereas the bark of this species was not well gasified even when using both steam and oxygen. We speculated that lignin, one of the main components of the bark, affected the gasification. To clarify the effects of lignin component, we also gasified organosolve(o-)lignin and delignified bark. We also performed thermogravimetric (TG) analysis of the wood, bark, delignified bark, and o-lignin using a thermo-balance which was specially designed and improved to be capable of analyzing feedstock in the presence of O2, 1-120 or both. The results obtained from TG analysis and gasification are discussed.
