This study investigates biogeochemical processes in a peat material that is intended for use in a barrier system for the remediation of heavy-metal contaminated groundwater. In a column experiment, microbial sulfate reduction and cation exchange on the organic substrate are the major biogeochemical processes affecting water composition. Since groundwater discharge through these systems is expected to vary seasonally with groundwater levels, the effect of variable flow rates on the rate of hydrogen sulfide production is studied. The results of this study indicate that sulfate reduction rates greater than 150 mmol L~(-1) yr~(-1) may be maintained in the peat material after the addition of lactate as a labile carbon source.
