The paper describes the thin slab casting and direct rolling of Nb -microalloyed HSLA grades. Careful liquid steel conditioning is an important preparatory step for successful thin slab casting. Essential development steps in CSP casters are considered next. By increasing the metallurgic al length and the number of segments, the productivity has been raised. Liquid core reduction gives higher flexibility to the caster in adapting to the required final gauge. The application of the electromagnetic brake is beneficial to both increasing the productivity and improving the surface quality. Appropriate mold fluxes improve surface quality. The thermomechanical processing in the hot strip mill is discussed shortly. Finally, examples for microstructure and properties of Nb -microalloyed HSLA steels processed in CSP plants are represented.
