The waste leachate brings changes in the characteristics of clay liner. A research study comprising of a comprehensive series of laboratory tests were undertaken to study the changes of pertinent characteristics of clay liner caused by waste leachate. The characteristics of clay liner are altered due to an increase in ion concentration and a decrease in dielectric constant owing to presence of organic substance and inorganic salt in the leachate. Permeability tests showed higher coefficient of permeability in undiluted or diluted waste sample than in pure water. Adsorption tests indicated that there is limit in the amount of lead that could be adsorbed by the soil and is a function of lead concentration in the leachate up to a certain extent. Sedimentation tests revealed that the clay particles tend to flocculate or aggregate in waste leachate than in pure water and is more apparent in a higher concentration of leachate.
