Results of research on the modelling of lead transport in partly saturated soil are presented. A general approach to contaminant transport in partly saturated soil is first developed embracing pore water movement, chemical solute movement and chemical interaction phenomena. A numerical solution algorithm is then proposed, which extends previous modelling capabilities, to more fully take account of contaminant behaviour. Pore water and chemical solute transport equations are solved simultaneously in a coupled fashion. Chemical interaction equations are linked to the transport equation set in a sequential iterative manner. Comparisons of numerical results with experimental observations are presented, for a range of soil leaching experiments, covering a variety of conditions. Good agreement is achieved, lending confidence to the approach proposed. Further research is however acknowledged to be required and in that sense, the results presented are seen as a first step in that task.
