It is generally evaluated that pilotis buildings are not safe enough. However, the technique of the confined concrete columns with high ductility will give an approach of solution. This paper introduce the concept of the pilotis building which is designed as the energy absorbing type structure, and propose to use the confined concrete columns with high ductility, namely soft first story structure, for improving the seismic performance of the pilotis buildings. Through the case studies on the pilotis buildings of two kinds of types, the seismic response analysis is carried out for 25, 50 and 75Kine ground motions, respectively, and it is discussed for the seismic performance, such as the effect of the different stiffness ratios and the diameters of columns, and so on.
