USE OF ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES FOR THE ENGINEERING SAFETY EVALUATION OF THE WWER-440/213 REACTORS OF THE DUKOVANY AND BOHUNICE V-2 NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

The paper discusses the use of assessment criteria and guidelines in the engineering safety evaluation performed by the European Nuclear Assistance Consortium for the Dukovany and Bohunice V-2 nuclear power plants. The aims of this project, which was financed by the European Commission through the PHARE programme, were: (1) to determine pragmatic, cost effective changes to the design and operation of the plants in order to enable them to achieve an adequate level of safety, and (2) to develop conditions for plant life extension. The following points are described: the production of an agreed set of assessment criteria and guidelines; the systematic assessment of the Dukovany plant against these criteria; the production of an evaluation report incorporating the identification of a specific set of recommendations; and the subsequent evaluation of the Bohunice V-2 plant on the basis of the application of the Dukovany results, and an assessment of the differences between the two plants. The results of the evaluation are summarized and it is briefly reported how the plants intend to apply these results to their future work programmes. Finally, lessons learned in the course of the evaluation, both positive and negative, are discussed.
