DOCN typically limits the useful ceramic cutting tool life during IN718 turning. Thermal shock resistance of tool material plays a critical role in determining the DOCN wear of the material, while influence of the chemical inertness on the DOCN resistance is negligible. Ranking of the DOCN resistance of the tool materials, measured by the eccentric bar turning tests, is consistent with the ranking of the thermal shock resistance of the materials. Therefore, factors that contribute to the improvement of the thermal shock resistance should enhance the DOCN wear resistance. A whisker reinforced cutting tool with A10N matrix has better DOCN resistance than commercial whisker reinforced alumina. AlON's lower Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient, as well as higher strength result in the performance improvements compared to alumina.
