This paper presents the field trials, conducted by Marconi Selenia Communications in joint cooperation with the Italian National Electric Operator (ENEL-TERNA), on an experimental system for Digital Power Line Communications over High Voltage Electric Power Lines. A segment of the electric grid operational network has been set up as trial-system on which to run some different tests; the main target was to enable a reliable and timely SCADA data transmission over conveyed waves PLC transmission medium. Advanced ATM-based switching equipment was employed to provide with additional traffic and network management capabilities the existing DPLC transmission network, and to guarantee the needed quality of service. This paper describes the field trials together with the obtained results; special highlight is given to the immediate benefits resulted for the Electric Operator.
