This paper reviews the transmission and reception of narrowband communications and its evolution to broadband services using high frequency data communications signals over the low voltage distribution network. The driving force for exploiting this part of the power distribution network and progress to date together with the type of problems encountered and potentially the limiting factors of providing such services are examined. The opportunity to provide Internet services, video-on-demand, and video streaming directly into the home or industrial building at cost effective price structures and a time when customers require such services is an opportunity not to be missed. To provide such services requires higher data rates and consequently higher bandwidths and operating frequencies. The development of standards for these services is considered with respect to current developments in the world and in particular within the European community.
