In 1998 the construction of the first cooling tower with a height of 200 m was started at the power station of Niederaussem, close to Cologne, Germany. This was quite a challenge for the people in charge of design and static analysis. In addition to this the owner of the power station decided to choose for the first time a newly developed type of concrete. In general new cooling towers in Germany are operated with flue gas discharge, which asks for a protective coating. Especially for this case, the owner together with leading research institutes and construction companies developed a concrete, which is believed to last for 40 years in operation without being coated. This paper will give information on the development, the tests and the new possibilities of this concrete and the experience of the construction of the cooling tower in 2000.
