CYBERCITY GIS AND THE PRACTICE IN SHENZHEN OF SOUTHERN CHINA

The term 'CyberCity' is used to represent the digital representation of a city that enables a person to explore and interact, in cyberspace, with the vast amounts of environmental and cultural information gathered about the city. The CyberCity not only shows data in three dimensions, i.e. the 3D city models in most cases, but also presents photorealistic surface description. Since its distinct realistic and informative properties in 3D representation, analysis and modeling, it is increasingly used in urban data handling and service, such as the emergency response, the virtual tourism and intelligent transportation, urban planning and design, electronic business and intelligent residential area, and so on. Based on a CyberCity GIS platform (called CCGIS) developed by LIESMARS of Wuhan University, series of pilot CyberCity GIS projects for Shenzhen city, a blooming city in southern China, have been constructed since 1999. Through these practices, most of the critical issues about the construction of CyberCity GIS were taken into consideration. After introducing the main characteristics of the CyberCity GIS software CCGIS, this paper presents the spatial perception about the 3D city models, especially about the degree of reality, the modeling scheme and the quality control methods, the huge database management and its real-time applications. At last, the authors discuss the primitive proposal about the future works on the CORBA based distributed GIS and the integrated representation of the interior and exterior buildings.
