The nanocrystallization and amorphization processes in various Zr-X alloys during accumulative roll bonding (ARB) are explored. The gradual evolutions of nanoerystalline (nc) phase size, amorphous (amf) volume fraction, hardness, elastic modulus are characterized, and the mechanisms are explored. The initial structure refinement is achieved via shear band propagation and substructure subdivision, follpwed by interdiffusion and amorphization in the mantle region of the elemental nc phase, resulting in nc core sizes of 3-10 nm. Finally, the nc cores suddenly transform into the amorphous phase due to the high interfacial energy.
