Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSD) are particularly widespread in the Calabria mountains, where rapid tectonic uplift and extreme meteoric events are compounded by major physico-chemical alterations of local crystalline-metamorphic rocks. The Mt. Granieri-Salincriti (Calabria - Italy) DSGSD is closely related to intense and deep chemical alteration, which is mainly due to the interaction between groundwater and sulphides contained in crystalline-metamorphic rocks. The geological-evolutionary model of the slope, inferred from site and laboratory investigations, assumes that the observed gravitational deformations are induced by belts of physico-chemical alterations, which are closely connected to groundwater circulation responsible for changes in the strength and physical parameters of the crystalline-metamorphic rock masses.
