Recent advances have been made in slope engineering practice, which are both knowledge-based and technology-driven. The advancement has contributed to enhancing the reliability and cost effectiveness of slope stabilization and landslide mitigation works. Uncertainties are chronic in geotechnical engineering, with the ground conditions being typically heterogeneous and transient groundwater conditions highly non-uniform, especially in tropically weathered profiles. This calls for the adoption of a landslide risk management framework in assessing the optimal landslide treatment strategy. Where a slope is to be stabilized, more robust engineering measures that are relatively insensitive to undetected local adverse geological and groundwater conditions should be used in order to enhance the reliability of the works.
