The role of pore pressures on the mechanics of mudslides

Mudslides are complex phenomena whose mechanics has not yet been completely clarified. According to some Authors, mudslide initiation has to be associated with undrained stress conditions which establish at the onset of failure; probably undrained conditions are continuously renewed during following movements as a consequence of further total stress changes. The analysis of the results of long-lasting investigations and monitoring of a number of mudslides in Southern Italy seem to confirm previous hypotheses.
