Model Integration for System Modeling

In this paper, integration of models for system modeling is briefly reviewed. We focus on those models which are simplified representation or abstraction of reality, and are used for decision support. In the field of model-based decision support system, model integration origins from model management, while the former extends the scope of the latter, especially in practice as a result of increasing complexities which had been continually perplexed people along the socioeconomic and environmental development. After a short description about model management development, we addressed principal research areas in model integration, representation issue, integration modes and their demonstrations as a variety of integrated modeling environments. Then we discuss how to implement model integration. Three kinds of approaches or strategies, top-down architecture, bottom-up and system approach, are addressed. However, model integration is not only for simple integration; it serves for systemic modeling about the concerned problems. That is why those approaches are not separated. Finally, some examples of implementing model integration are mentioned.
