A Method of Process Knowledge Acquisition in Organization

In an organization, each work is thought to be a dynamic process which is composed of some activities. In this article, we define the activities in the business process and the relationships between them as the process knowledge (abbreviated as PK). PK is researched with the methods of systems engineering. A new method is proposed to acquire PK, in which PK is represented together with multi-factor flow chart (abbreviated as MFFC) and multi-level document (abbreviated as MLD). In detail, the "top-down" method and visualization tools are used to capture PK by the man-machine interactive way. The steps of acquiring PK is also presented in the proposed method based on the characteristics of PK. This whole acquiring process is consistent with human's cognition theory very well. By using the proposed method, the individual and tacit PK about business process is transformed into organizational and explicit PK. Organizations can then use this method to separate PK from individual, and manage PK as a part of the organization's knowledge base.
