An electric field generation set-up was established for rodents and chick embryos that can produce uniform, vertical electric field of known strength, similar to the field at ground level produced by a transmission line (about one meter above ground) and avoids corona formation and electric shock to the exposed animals. The generation of the field was achieved by parallel plate arrangement, which can accommodate more number of animals. Laboratory experimentation carried out on animals at 5 and 10kV/m does not cause any harm in rats. On the other hand, long-term exposure of 15kV7m to rats showed a possibility of alterations in liver function. In conclusion, present experimental investigation recommends a tolerance limit of 2kV/m, for lines up to and including 400kV system voltage.
