Chaira Underground Pumped Storage Power Station is located in the area of the Chaira Resort, approximately 100 km south-east of Sofia, Bulgaria. Waste heat is released by the water cooling system for transformer oil. Cooling water for transformers oil coolers enters the heat pump evaporator through the heat exchanger and buffer tanks. Hot water from the condenser will be delivered by circulation pumps to the accumulator and to the District Heating System. In order to save electric energy the heat pump will be operated predominantly during the night hours and heat will be accumulated in an accumulator made for this purpose with a storage capacity of 1500 m~3. This feasibility study will present brief technical and economical evaluations of the alternative heat sources energy efficiency.
