Waste tires are made of oil, carbon, and steel—three valuable commodities. Tires—and tire-derived fuels(TDF)— have a high calorific value and low moisture along with other favorable fuel characteristics. Its heating value ranges from 29~37MJ/kg, which compares favorably to other conventional fuels. As a fuel, scrap tires are an economically viable choice to supplement existing sources. This study is thus aimed at enhancing the fundamental understanding of the combustion behavior of selected fuels. In this paper a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) is used as the experimental means. The pyrolysis tests of TDF and coal in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas were conducted respectively. And then the co-pyrolysis tests of TDF and coal in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas were also conducted at different blending ratios and different heating rates. By the thermogravimetry analysis, pyrolysis characteristics of TDF and coal were obtained. In addition, in the thermogravimetric analyzer, in air, combustion studies on single fuel particles were conducted at a heating rate of 10K/min. At different blending ratios, co-combustion experiments were conducted. Weight loss curves have been obtained. The combustion properties of each fuel were discussed by the TG/DTG plots.
