As the major production base of the coal industry, the atmospheric environment of Shanxi province has been serious polluted. According to the 1998's report of the world health origination (WHO), Taiyuan is the worst air pollution city in the world. The concentration of SO_2 and dust in air is over the national standard enormously. In order to overcome these serious pollution problems, an international cooperation between Tohoku University in Japan and the related agency in Shanxi province had been started from 1997. This international scientific research group essentially takes ironmaking and coking industry which is the major resource of pollution in Shanxi as a research object to find the feasible way to improve environment in Shanxi. Take the of 2000's data as a based standard, it can be found that if using machine coke oven to replace non-machine coke ovens, and middle-size blast furnace to replace small-size blast furnace, the CO_2 emission will be cut 59.1 million tons every year, SO_2 and dust emissions can also be cut greatly. Using Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) method in the coking industry, the sensible heat can be recycled to generate electricity. For example, if 2 million tons coke oven machinery adopts CDQ, the CO_2 emission will be cut 2 million tons in one year, and by CDQ, the water content in coke could be reduced and strength could be enhanced. By importing the Clean Development Mechanism (CMD), Shanxi province could increase their opportunity to get aid of fund and technology from developed nations to promote the environmental improvement.
