The temperature drop of the liquid steel between the BOF and continuous casting is an important factor that imposes constraints on the operation of the steel plant. In order to improve the operation, a model for simulation of transient thermal states of metallurgical ladles has been developed. The approach is based on an analytical solution, where the arising heat transfer problems are treated efficiently and the solution procedure is strictly controlled. In order to estimate the temperature drop of the molten steel, the equations are further coupled to the energy balance of the steel in the ladle.
