I review recent approaches to the modeling of the flow of simple fluids over inclined surfaces. Complication arising from the introduction of physical effects such as Marangoni forces of thermal or chemical origin, evaporation, are also considered. Weighted residual methods are used to replace in a systematic fashion the direct search for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations by the study of the dynamics of the film thickness and other appropriate quantities averaged other this thickness.
