A review is given of recent developments in the study of new water-soluble cellulose derivatives. It deals with hydrophobically-modified water-soluble cellulose derivatives, water-soluble cationic cellulose derivatives, water-soluble amphoteric cellulose derivatives, and water-soluble sulfur-containing cellulose derivatives. Unlike common water-soluble cellulose derivatives, these modified cellulosic polymers provide special and high properties or multi-functions for their utilization. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, their attractiveness is expected to rise in the future due to their biodegradability.
