In the grafting of the zwitterionic monomer 3-dimethyl(methacryloyloxyethyl)ammonium propane sulfonate (DMAPS) onto hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), three initiating systems based on eerie ammonium nitrate (CAN) were studied with respect to their initiating ability. Corresponding to each initiating system, the rate of grafting was determined and the overall activation energy of the reaction between DMAPS and HEC was calculated. For the initiating systems investigated, the order of increasing the grafting yield was as follows: CAN/ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) > CAN / nitric acid > CAN. For the grafting initiated by CAN/EDTA system, the effects of the concentrations of CAN and EDTA were also considered.
