SILURIAN-DEVONIAN STRATIGRAPHY AT ZHANGJIAJIE, NORTHWESTERN HUNAN PROVINCE, CHINA

Zhangjiajie is situated in northwest Hunan Province, China, at the point of juncture of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the drainage area of Dongting Lake. Zhangjiajie extends over the area between 28°52′ to 29°48′ N and 109°40′ to 110°40′ E. It is a popular tourist destination, particularly because of the spectacular natural scenery in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which is a UNESCO heritage site. The scenic area is dominated by peaks formed of Upper Devonian quartz sandstones. Prior to 1994, Zhangjiajie was called Dayong. The new name was introduced after the name of China's First National Park, the Zhangjiajie Forest Park, which is located in the Wulingyaun Scenic Area, about 20 km north of the city's urban area (Figs. 1, 2).
