To provide scalable and stable Video-On-Demand(VOD) service, we in this paper propose Multiple Description(MD) embedded Peer-to-Peer approach. Peer-to-Peer(P2P) systems take advantage of resources at individual peers and hence scale with the population size. Additionally, our approach builds P2P system based on application-level overlay, and cooperates with peer buffering, achieving effective bandwidth usage. However, P2P systems always suffer difficulties e.g. peer unreliability and network heterogeneity. To address these issues, we firstly introduce into our system the MD coding method which is transmission rate cumulative hence suit for heterogeneous bandwidth and is decoding robust thus can avoid quality demotion caused by node departure. As combining these schemes, their associate advantages work together, and benefit VOD system in enlarging service scale and improving video quality. Our analysis and simulations show that MD embed P2P approach scales well in condition of dynamic individual peers and heterogeneous network, and compared to the layered P2P scheme, it generally out-performs in nearly 2-3 more descriptions/layers which enhance the video quality obviously.
