Despite the success of proxy caching in the Web, proxy servers still have not been effectively used for video caching technology. Because of the explosive demand for multimedia streaming applications, caching popular videos at a proxy close to the interested clients becomes one of the most emergent issues for the next-generation Internet. Furthermore, a scalable coding technology is applied to the proxy server in order to improve the utilization of the end-user bandwidth and provide more optional video quality of service(QoS). in this paper, we focus on the cache management with scalable video streaming. A Multi-Stage Prefix Caching (MSPC)mechanism is proposed to maximize the backbone bandwidth reduction on the heterogeneous end-user network conditions. The main contributions of this mechanism are (1) an optimal model for both single and multiple videos, (2) a cache replacement strategy to dynamically manage the cache allocation and (3) a feasible implentention method for reducing the calculation complexity of MSPC. The experimental results show Che improvement of MSPC compared to both video based and layer based caching mechanisms.
