Numerous studies have shown that buildings in the U.S. consume at least 30-50% more energy than they need to deliver present indoor conditions while at the same time not providing adequate indoor air quality, thermal and visual comfort. This paper describes a range of architectural alternatives, including advanced natural conditioning strategies for improved indoor quality and energy efficiency in commercial buildings. These environmental conditioning strategies rely on a firm commitment to collaborative design, to ensure the level of integration of enclosure, mechanical, lighting and interior systems, needed to realize buildings as mediators between climate and indoor quality. The paper uses illustrative examples of high-performance buildings world-wide, that manifest these approaches through the appropriate integration of enclosure, mechanical, and interior systems.
